New Zealand First Plunges in Polling

A general election will be held in New Zealand on the 7th of November, 2026. Minor government coalition partner, NZ First, has campaign hoardings up around the country, the main message being: New Zealanders First. Note, not New Zealand first, but only New Zealanders first.

They've followed that up with a policy that only Kiwi citizens can receive National Superannuation (pension). Such a policy excludes all those with permanent residence, but who still rely on their overseas passport.

This has got to be a policy that represents the biggest act of self-harm I've yet witnessed on the campaign trail. New Zealand is an inclusive country that doesn't 'other' people. Not only that, many keep with their foreign passport as often their country of origin doesn't allow dual citizenship. They choose to keep one foot in each camp for all kinds of reasons, the principal one being they can exist in a legal sense back home. Think inheritances, property transfers and the like.

NZ First has plummeted in two of the most recent public opinion polls. What the geniuses at NZ First failed to realise is that a lot of their voters were permanent residents with the right to vote. Now, they're not going to vote NZ First, and the party may slip below the 5% threshold under MMP and be out of parliament.

Stupid doesn't even begin to describe NZ First.

The Opportunity Party

New Zealand voters will have noticed the rise of The Opportunity Party, TOP, in the polls. The media is pushing them hard, not a day goes by without them being mentioned.

Rumour is, they've been taken over by Labour and they're now a budget brand of Labour and the Greens. Hearing this, I tried to find things out; who exactly is the TOP leader married to? His name is Grant. That's it, Grant. Good luck getting more information on him. I heard he was related to Labour leader Chris Hipkins, I wonder if that's true?

Then another rumour has the TOP deputy leader related to James Shaw, former Greens leader.

Given the silence around the real name and career of the TOP leader's husband, and the sudden excitement of the media at everything TOP, with gushing praise that is sick inducing, I WILL NOT be voting for these tax tax tax fiends in the 2026 general election.

Thought New Zealanders ought to be forewarned.

Free School Meals - New Zealand

New Zealand's right wing politicians currently have an issue with free school meals. They're not supplied everywhere, but are made available in poorer areas where nutrition is a real issue.

In the embedded video, Richard Prebble is being interviewed by Leah Panapa. Prebble is a politician who was part for the Labour government of the 1980's that destroyed the modern post-war NZ economy, while Panapa should know better, but she doesn't as she's ignorant.

Prebble says, 'real facts'. Oh really, he's wrong, the facts are that NZ has always fed its vulnerable children. From the 1930's up until the late 1960's every primary school child in NZ had to drink half a pint of milk each school day. That's about 300ml every day Monday to Friday. Then, across the whole country up until, I think, the 1980's dairy products for human consumption were heavily subsidised. It was cheaper to buy milk and cheese than it was to drink a Coke or Sprite.

Additionally, every mother in New Zealand was paid a sum of money each week to feed their children. They got paid for every child, and this money went to mothers so that fathers didn't spend the money down at the pub.

Then, finally, health camps operated across the country. Children found to be malnourished were taken to these camps and given food and exercise. These health camps operated for most of the twentieth century.

And just think what happens if NZ doesn't feed its vulnerable children. The cost of this is enormous, the country would end up with a segment of uneducated and sickly people. The cheapest way to deal with it is to feed the children at school and put these children in a position where they can learn. A hungry child doesn't learn, it's as simple as that.

South Island Independence Movement

With New Zealand's South Island independence movement gaining increasing support, it occurred to me to point out the path to victory.

A party must be established with the intent to win the all-important 5% threshold from the country's party vote. Once the 5% is achieved, the new party may be in a position to insist on devolution as part of any coalition agreement. Both of the large parties, National and Labour will need coalition partners in 2026.

How to get the 5%?

I suggest teaming up with the Maori party. Oh, really? I'll explain:

Maori mostly live in the North Island. If the South Island leaves, Maori in the North Island immediately hold a large share of the remaining votes in the old New Zealand. It could be as much as 20% of the voters. So, there is a huge incentive for Maori to vote for the South Island party when it comes to the party vote, but still return their MP's in the electorates.

Think about it, this makes sense.

I love a good rant and this is a classic. I won't embed it because of the expletives used, but here it is:

Wellington City Water

The capital city of New Zealand has a problem; 45% of the city's potable water is lost due to leaks.

That's a lot of water lost and water restrictions have been introduced. But the council refuse to do anything about it, leaks can be literally found on every street. It is below Third World.

What the council are doing is holding the region to ransom, and demanding money from the taxpayer through central government.

Solution: the NZ Government should step in, sack the Wellington City Council and put in place a commissioner to run the city. This happened to Environment Canterbury previously, and it worked.

Do it now, be firm and decisive.

Did the Working Class Desert NZ Labour in 2023?

Left-wing writer and activist, Chris Trotter lays out what he thinks are the reasons for working class New Zealanders voting against their traditional home - the Labour Party.

I have been saying for years now that the working stiff in New Zealand needs to ditch Labour and find another voice. I don't believe right-wing is the answer either, nor is racial division. A voice has to be found that can unite all working people once again, under the one banner, building a New Zealand for all Kiwis.

https://pointofordernz.wordpress.com/2023/10/19/chris-trotter-losing-the-working-class/

I ALWAYS WONDERED what it would take to detach the New Zealand working class from Labour. Not all of the working-class, obviously, but enough to strip the party of the demographic heft that, for more than a century, has made it a decisive electoral player. Now I know, but it took a fair few wrong guesses before I got there.

NZ General Election 2023 - Early Voting

We are seeing interesting turnout results with only a few days of voting remaining in the New Zealand General Election. The number of people voting is well down on 2020, but ahead of 2017.

This looks bad for Labour and the Greens. These two rely on a large turnout. But for National, ACT and NZ First, their voters get to the polling booth rain, hail or shine. It's looking like a disaster for Labour, based on the numbers voting.

DemocracyNZ Registered

I've been calling for this for a long time; a centrist political party to replace National. DemocracyNZ could be that party. They're founded and led by former Northland MP, Matt King. During the scamdemic I embedded videos of King interviewing epidemiologist Simon Thornley about Covid. King is a clear thinker and opposed mandates. Now he's also criticising Labour's fart tax proposals which will rip the heart out of rural New Zealand.

Travelling around NZ, Matt King is drawing hundreds to his meetings. More than 400 attended one meeting in Christchurch alone. That's significant as Christchurch is heartland Labour, but it also has a couple of suburbs that are blue hair-dye National. If the National leader held a public meeting in Christchurch, he'd struggle to get 200 to attend.

Farmers - Wake Up

With the car tax, err, I mean support for EV's now upon us, time to remind New Zealand farmers how stupid they are. They constantly vote CCP National. This means the other parties don't give a flying fu** about farmers. And CCP National don't care either as they can count on farmers no matter what.

And then Ardern could, possibly, maybe, wink wink, steal or transfer their party votes whichever way she likes, just so Hollywood and the movie makes her look good. Muslims one minute, farmers the next and saving the planet. Everyone must play their part in her rise to superstardom and total wonderfulness.

Here's a suggestion farmers. Get off China's teat and stop thinking the CCP National Party of Wokeland Aotearoa will some day save your sorry arses. They won't, even if they win an election some time this millennium, they'll just give you your money back in order to take it away again in some other way.

No, what you've got to do is create uncertainty. Or join the Greens and use the democratic process to take them over. When I suggested that on Twitter last year, the Greens just about had brain aneurisms they were that apoplectic with rage. But really do it. If farmers got off their fat Hilux-riding arses and behaved strategically, they could shut down the Greens and have an honest debate about the direction of the country. Cosying up to the traitors that are the CCP National Dimwits is not the answer.

National Party of New Zealand: China's Lackey

Australia is having a war of words and a trade war with China right now and things are getting more heated as the weeks go by. The Australians will be holding an inquiry into the China virus, its origins and China's handling of the pandemic at the beginning. All very good, long overdue, Australia appears to be the only country taking the matter to its logical conclusion; that China actively undermined the western world.

This will hugely impact New Zealand's National Party. That's because they've been busted cosying up to China and even had a member of parliament in their ranks who had taught China's spies. This man was a former member of the CCP, and worked for the PLA's university of foreign languages.

National are Quislings, they're a dead party walking. I can't see how anyone could vote for them. National recruited former CCP members into their ranks, and took political donations from Chinese interests. It can't get much worse than that.

Australia is NZ's closest ally, a form of big brother. New Zealand is badly compromised by having the National party exist at all. How could NZ be trusted by Australia? The answer: it couldn't be, not until the National party is purged from NZ's political landscape.

OUR New Zealand Party

Names matter a lot. What should be the name of the new Conservative New Zealand political party?

But first we can cancel out existing names. Gone are New Conservatives, National, Labour, Greens, ACT, and Maori.

Trip down memory lane and a few candidates:

New Zealand Party - Started by Bob Jones it contested the 1984 general election and did pretty well but didn't win any seats. In terms of share of the vote it gained 12.25%, which would make it kingmaker today. The name isn't currently registered, the party having fallen apart in the early 1990's.

How about then: OUR New Zealand Party.

Whatever the name it must be unifying, not divisive. So, out goes One Nation, Libertarian, etc. TOP is not a bad name the more you think about it (as a party can't say what they're like, its policies are too 'pure' in terms of economics to put it in a winnable position).

MMP is a funny beast and I think where all new parties have failed is they go straight for the 5%. A more practical approach is to attract popular local people to stand in seats and try to get in that way, by winning electorates. Think this can't be done? The Maori party have proved this works. Their electorate level campaigning is pretty good for a small party.

Membership: this new entity only works if it can attract 2,000 members. That provides a number in each electorate across the country. Think about covering people away on holiday, sick, etc., you still need to find people to agitate locally. I know 500 is the threshold but that just isn't enough. These members have to be paid up and active.

Policies: central policy planks would be

* written Constitution for NZ with embedded free speech and transparency of government (right to privacy);
* private property protected and pursuit of profit encouraged;
* Defence (what's the point in owning stuff or having free speech if anyone can take it off you);
* Rule of law and equality before the law;
* Right to education and healthcare;
* Build infrastructure (without a strong built environment there is no point in the abovementioned rights);
* Believe that the individual knows what's best for themselves;
* Family, neighbourhood, suburb, village, town, city, country in that order;
* Freedom of religion.

Input welcome.

South Island Independence

With New Zealand's Labour party about to bankrupt the country, about time for the South Island to think about independence.

New political party: SCRAM Stands for South Island, Chathams, Rakiura Autonomy Movement.

Policies:

No lockdowns Zero income tax for individuals and companies
Cheap cigarettes
Excise tax on EV's
Literacy and numeracy compulsory
Winning rugby world cup compulsory
Free speech protected
Industry encouraged with free trade zones providing cheap land/zero rates.

How would this work? Any number of ways, but it could exist within New Zealand as a whole. The SCRAM entity could have its own laws apart from Defence, Foreign Affairs and existing Trade agreements. But not like a federal structure, more like a confederacy, that way overarching federal legislation wouldn't apply. As an example, SCRAM could introduce the death penalty for the worst crimes (such as murder with aggravating factors like torture and rape/sexual assault) and not be controlled by Wellington.

In the future, SCRAM could merge with Western Australia which has voted for independence in the past but never had the numbers in Canberra to push it through. This new entity would create a new empire of the Southern and Indian oceans. Yay. Crucially, it would be resource rich, boundless wealth is tied up in the South and in WA. Effete classes in the urban conurbations are skewing the landscape to enrich themselves at the expense of those who sit on top of that wealth.

Precedents?

There are a few out there, we could come up with a peculiarly Kiwi solution so Southerners still call themselves New Zealanders. Here are a few models to study and borrow ideas from:

Wales
Scotland
Northern Ireland
Monaco
San Marino
Andorra
Lichtenstein
Luxembourg
Malta
Vatican City
Isle of Man
Jersey
Guernsey

Or look at secessionist movements:

Catalonia
Venice (separate from Italy proper and once its own empire)
California (broke away from Mexico)
Texas (Broke away from Mexico, then joined the US after a referendum)

How would secession be achieved? To begin with, members of the party must be elected to parliament. If using the Northern Ireland example with Sinn Fein, they'd not take their seats. However, I suggest this party does take its seats and agitates for a referendum on secession, only to be held in the South Island amongst those on the electoral roll there. If the party gets itself into a kingmaker position, it could make this referendum a condition of forming a government. Auckland politicians are a greedy lot and would do this despite knowing NZ would be broken up. What do you think?

New Zealand Political Failure

Boris Johnson may be facing a leadership challenge in the UK if the latest virus policy becomes real. They're now talking about lockdowns every winter, without end. Yeah, every winter and then it'll be all year round. I say this often -don't encourage politicians, they just start getting ideas and their ideas are always bad ones.

In New Zealand, politics has failed the country. Back in the day (violins please), politicians didn't make politics their career. They generally got involved bit by bit, either through whatever their profession was, the unions or business. In other words they had a life before politics. Not now, everyone in parliament is a bed wetting, born to rule numpty who thinks it's a good idea to have their hand in the taxpayers pocket. That's their life choice, they have no other life. And everyone is to blame, National, Labour, ACT, Greens, the lot. Basically, parliament is the enemy. MMP has worsened the situation as now you just can't get rid of them. The cat comes back, it won't stay away. You want examples? Gerry Brownlee and Damien O'Connor, there's two for you (both have lost their electorate seats at some point but stayed in off the list).

What's the answer? Wholesale change. A new party based on sound core principles and the money to see things through has to take over and actually do what is needed to be done. This is not a cheap undertaking and is very time consuming, but I see no other way around it. The political class has failed, so a vote for Judith Collins, or Simon Bridges will still get the same result as a vote for Ardern. The result is still failure.

Failure? Yes, here's a short list:

- crumbling infrastructure
- plummeting education standards
- hospitals falling apart
- complete inability to defend territorial waters
- circuitous bureaucracy which doesn't actually get anything done
- economy on the brink of collapse and no idea how to reverse the trend (how about let business get on and do business - shock suggestion)

I'm sure you can add to the list, this was just off the top of my head. On the individual level, clearly you have to look after the nuts and bolts of your daily lives, so don't carry too much debt. Don't spend money you don't have to. But wider than that, we have to organise, and yes I've been political practically my whole life and I'm prepared to devote time to the task. But please don't suggest joining one of the existing rabble as I just don't see that working. Here's a blog post I did on what it'll take to get over that all-important 5% threshold. https://kenhorlor.blogspot.com/2020/10/new-zealand-politics-getting-over-that.html

Snob's Guide to New Zealand Making Comeback

 My book on navigating around New Zealand society is undergoing a resurgence. When first released it was always top 100 on Amazon's Australian and Oceanian Politics category in both the physical and Kindle format. As a Kindle read it also rated highly within travel guides, a subject it does also address. But then it fell away, still selling but not enough to push it back into the limelight.

Recently readers have started borrowing the book from the Kindle Lending Library, which is new for me as in the past people bought the book. I know how much of the book gets read this way as I'm paid by the page through the Kindle Lending Library. My last two books get read completely when borrowed which I'm told is quite rare. Books are generally not read properly, readers skip pages, more than 20% of each book can be skipped through in fact. These readers later claim to have finished the book, when they haven't done that at all. So it's nice to know that my efforts are appreciated or at least hold the reader.

Why the comeback for Snob's Guide to New Zealand? I think the answer is twofold, people in the US are unhappy with the way things are headed there and maybe looking to escape. The other is controversy surrounding NZ's election and the possibility of electoral interference there as well. Readers are interested to know how the NZ system works, and exactly how its electoral system is flawed.

You can read my book by following this link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07J9XRCWK

It's an easy read, written in an accessible way, but it's not endless gush either, if you want to know exactly how NZ operates, this is your first port of call. You get the lowdown, need to know stuff.

New Zealand Politics: Getting Over That 5% Threshold

Over recent years I have had representatives of minor New Zealand political parties approach me for advice about how to get over the party vote threshold of 5%. Without winning an electorate, a party without 5% of the party vote cannot enter parliament. At first glance this target doesn't sound insurmountable, to be safe it represents about 150,000 party votes. However, in reality it is a huge hurdle and I'm about to explain why that is.

My advice to these minor parties doesn't get far. I should be better at this, as maybe I could turn it into profit for myself, but I just don't have it in me to string them along. The conversation starts out with these hopefuls asking, what does it take to get that all-important 5%? My answer is brief; got $2 million to kick things off? Then $1 million each year thereafter until the election period starts and your spending is statutorily limited.

There is silence around the room. Err. I never hear from them again.

Okay, so let's back this truck up and load the rig properly. I'm assuming this minor party has no sitting member of parliament able to use the machinery of the institution to help things along. No sweetheart deal with a major party gifting them a seat. And they're not a splinter group of an already established outfit, the way the Greens were when originally part of the Alliance back in the 1990's.

We start out by gaining party members. The minimum is 500 financial members who are eligible to vote. That's not nearly enough. If we take a conservative approach and say that this party needs to be present in at least 60 electorates, with a minimum 50 members in each to cover for those dying, getting ill or busy in their life; we need a total membership of 3,000 at least.

These 3,000 members have to be supported by a paid party infrastructure, on deck 24/7 dealing with problems as they crop up. Their numbers don't have to be large but they'll be on the road a lot and they must be experienced and discreet. Thus, they'll be well paid.

What I've just described is very expensive. Obtaining those members presents a problem in itself. It costs money just to get members who in return may not have the money to donate back to cover set up costs. It's a bit like an initial public offering of shares to the public that falls over, the stock brokers taking a bath on the exercise.

But assuming these members are found and they're able to financially support operations through subscriptions and donations alone; how then is this party going to win those 150,000 votes from that small base of supporters? This is where it gets tricky, and almost every minor party has failed thus far.

The party must have access to media, both in the traditional and in new media such as YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Personally I recommend online newspapers and YouTube channels. A mixture of paid advertising and simple free promotion and mentions. Sounds good so far, right? Wrong, as there is another huge hurdle and it is bio-chemical, yeah, for real.

Advance NZ and New Conservatives both failed to understand this bio-chemical component of the political process. They thought that by engaging using social media, and let's face it they've been everywhere leading up to the 2020 General Election, they'd break through. Nope, didn't happen.

Why not? When in the polling booth voters revert to type. Bear in mind both Labour and National have been around a long time. They're cross-generational. The trauma of past events has been planted in voters genes, so when they vote, they're using instinct. Even though people may attend meetings of those minor parties, agree about everything and promise to vote for them, they do not. Why? Their genetic inheritance kicks in and they vote as their parents did and their grandparents and so on.

Breaking this cycle is where the money goes in bulk. This new party has to be about as popular as Keeping Up with the Kardashians to break through using social media, or just about own a major news outlet using traditional channels.

And then lastly, timing. There has to be an appetite for this new brand. Without it that shelf space will disappear quickly as no-one will be buying. On top of that, the organisation has to be kept running smoothly with everyone on topic, every day. You can't force feed a message the electorate doesn't want and neither can you have the right message but it be disjointed or haphazard in application.

Sometimes I'm asked, of all minor parties, which has been most successful? They imagine I'll talk about the MMP era, but I go back farther and look at Social Credit's 20.7% in 1981 and the New Zealand Party backed by Bob Jones in 1984 which achieved 12.25%. The latter is important because that party effectively split the centre/right vote and ensured an easy victory for Labour. Both are interesting as they were successful through different means. Social Credit simply plugged away for decades, while the NZ Party was formed and became active quite swiftly.

So, anyone out there ready to talk? I know how things run, been around a long time.

National Party Up Against It

Found this interesting blog post from experienced journalist, Karl Du Fresne about the bias New Zealand's National Party faces from the media:

http://karldufresne.blogspot.com/2020/10/its-not-just-labour-party-that-collins.html

Advance NZ

There's a small political tsunami occurring in New Zealand right now; they're called Advance NZ. This new political party was created by ex-National MP Jamie-Lee Ross but where it found its feet was when they joined forces with the New Zealand Public Party. The latter group merged with Advance NZ so they could be on the ballot for the 2020 general election.

Musician Billy TK Jr is behind NZPP. They're an odd bunch, often holding what may be called fringe beliefs; opposing vaccinations and the 1080 poisoning of pests and so on.

Why the tsunami? COVID-19 and the associated lengthy and damaging lockdowns have fuelled support for this group. People already alienated by the existing power structures and the lockdown has led to a feeling of powerlessness. Into this void strode Advance NZ. Combined with an effective social media campaign, numbers attending meetings, protests, rare but well handled appearances on television, Advance NZ are gaining traction. They could make the 5% threshold, while the Greens and NZ First may be out altogether. If this happens, it'll be a major shift in the NZ political landscape.

The next few weeks will be interesting to watch.
