Twenty-five years ago, it was predicted the internet would replace the established old-school media landscape with its traditional advertising model. For specialist niches, a lot of this was print based. I've done a lot of advertising in trade publications, with mixed success. Generally speaking, advertising could get very expensive, very quickly.

Now we have the rise of online content creators, proving those early predictions. I was a little surprised to find that personal finance is the most profitable for content creators with a solid following. The following article outlines things rather well. Note the reference to CPM and RPM. CPM is cost per mille, or cents per 1,000, that is, how much you spend for 1,000 views. In my day, this could be very expensive if you were targeting capital intensive industries with very defined targets in mind. RPM is revenue per mille, or earnings in cents or dollars per 1,000 views. CPM is how much you spend, RPM how much you're getting back. Clearly, you want to maximise revenue and not spend too much to get it. 

These days, individuals equipped with just a few essential pieces of equipment can deliver as much reach as large corporates. It does look as if some large traditional media companies are about to become dinosaurs.

The highest CPM YouTube niches in 2026 are Personal Finance ($15-22 CPM), Make Money Online ($15-20 CPM), Legal/Court Drama ($12-18 CPM), Digital Marketing ($12-18 CPM), and Real Estate ($10-16 CPM).

James O'Brien's Quality Rant

James O'Brien is an English leftie broadcaster, and this rant of his is an excellent destruction of all modern politicians in the UK, and of its media. 

What O'Brien describes are weak politicians unwilling to do the work; they're uninformed and uninterested in their surroundings. Meanwhile, the media frame the news in a peculiar way, they ignore substantive issues, dismiss facts, and are constantly pushing their own agenda. This has led to the wasteland we see today, right across the developed world. 

O'Brien talks about Brexit, but it really doesn't matter what the issue is as his comments on the quality of politicians is what matters instead, and the way the media work to advance their agenda.

Prince Harry's Win

It is a win folks, I read a lot of people saying it wasn't, but nah, he achieved a significant win.

I embed the below video as I think it is balanced. But, I'd add by saying that once you go down this road, there really is no going back. The press will now be after Prince Harry, they'll be predatory and he can no longer expect positive stories about him or his family. All these journalists know one another and work alongside each other, they marry one another and work for whoever pays them. It is like a tribe and only a few are in it. I suspect this is why the British Royal Family never, or very rarely sue. It becomes a downward spiral, when positive news is what is sought.

Today FM is Toast

The media failures are starting in New Zealand and about time. These mainstream grifters have been lording it over everyone, about time that lot found a real job.

Today FM is the first to announce its closure and there will be more to follow. 

The message to all people is this; if the media were promoting the jab, if they supported this criminal government, don't listen to them, and tell their advertisers what you think and that you won't be buying their products.

New NZ Media Needed

The old media is dead in New Zealand. Now, they're just PR. We need to gather the ground back and get our own media. Clearly it would be mostly online. But to try and recover what is left of NZ, we need it to happen.

Stuff For Sale

The New Zealand media company, Stuff is for sale. It's a silly name and an even sillier company. Their main rival, NZME has offered $1 for it. I'll go $10, don't say I'm a skinflint. What do you say eh? C'mon Stuff owners, give me a call.

Why is Stuff going bust I hear you ask. People like to say it's because of technology, the age of television and the internet. While Stuff does have a busy website, they rely heavily on newspapers. Yes, that's part of the story, but their failure has to do with other factors as well; a lack of professionalism, no local news, lack of analysis, and a tendency to fawn and suffocate over who happens to be in power at the time. Stuff has become a sycophantic weasel and no-one trusts them. I don't blame the readers shunning them and these days never buy their newspapers myself.

Climate Strike

The event is planned for March 15, 2019. Supposedly this event is being organised by school children without the endorsement of schools. In New Zealand at least; who is really behind the planning for this event? What are their politics exactly and what are their credentials for safely managing a nationwide campaign?

I've noticed a decided lack of information about this. I don't believe for one minute that children are capable of organising a nationwide political campaign. The children are being used as pawns. Disgraceful.

Are valuable learnings possible? As things stand there is no valuable lesson as schools are not on board with it. Without classroom time examining all the angles of the debate, the whole exercise amounts to brainwashing.

The media has been complicit in this brainwashing. We need to know who the adults are behind this event and who is to be held accountable if anything goes wrong. Media, start being the professionals you claim to be.

Those Pesky Inauguration Numbers

Face it, the inauguration numbers for Donald J Trump were down. What else would you expect, when it was forecast to rain, everyone knew what he was going to say, and he's not that good at saying it. There really was no good reason to be there, it's what happens in the polling booth that matters.

So why would Trump's team be so on the offensive over the perfectly valid reports that numbers were down on past inaugurations. The best Trump could hope for would be no reports on attendance, and how likely is that? I mean, really.

It seems Trump is setting out at this early stage, to tame the media. Cow them, keep them in line. It's a chilling prospect, and from the leader of the free world no less.

Some advice Mr President. Take a leaf from the likes of Joh Bjelke-Petersen, the Premier of Queensland who did in fact effectively tame the media. Joh was a really good demagogue who ruled Queensland like he owned it. Reference his daily press conferences where he 'fed the chooks.' Any self-respecting demagogue must take a leaf from the Bjelke-Petersen play book.

I don't see this ending well. If the press have any spine they must go on the attack. After all, the best defence is an effective counter-attack. If they do not go on the attack, well, when it really matters and this or that war is being touted, the press may be acquiescent and go along with it. So the media have to fight. Keep asking questions until you get answers.

TV3

What is going on over at TV3? They've now lost news co-anchor Hilary Barry.

TV3 news has always been better than TVNZ. Now their morning TV show, Paul Henry 6-9am which also features Barry, has made an impact. But the rest of the programming is dire to say the least. It looks like they're going bust.

Why can't TV3 make money? The radio side of MediaWorks is reported to be profitable, you'd think the television side of the company could manage that, hmm?

I have no idea but I'll sit and watch with interest.
