Steve Ballmer's Intuit Dome

I'm changing my mind, somewhat, about Steve Ballmer. His stadium in Los Angeles, built at his own cost, is, apparently, a brilliant place to watch basketball. But he's now facing one full year shut out from his NBA team, the Los Angeles Clippers.

Looking at the podcasts dealing with the issues, I've come to the conclusion that it is the NBA and other powerful corporate interests, taking down someone they see as a pretender.

The LA Lakers, Boston Celtics, New York Knickerbockers etc are not about to give way to the Clippers. It looks like a stitch up. Other teams in the NBA have done similar things and got no more than a slap on the wrist.

Are the Clippers Finished?

The SEC is now probing the Los Angeles Clippers. Woh, this is getting really big:

Steve Ballmer Penalised

Oh no, the Los Angeles Clippers are set to remain complete losers for the foreseeable future. Majority team owner, Steve Ballmer, has been suspended from all operations for one entire year.

Here's the law firm report summarising their independent investigation: https://www.wlrk.com/docs/Report_of_Independent_Investigators_Concerning_the_LA_Clippers_and_Kawhi_Leonard.pdf

I think I can hear the Lakers laughing from here. Just sell the team Ballmer, you're never going to win anything. Ballmer, you are completely out of your depth.

"This was the biggest punishment ever handed out in the National Basketball Association. You know all of it at this point…This was a phenomenal level of incompetence from [Steve] Ballmer and the Clippers. They have screwed up almost a decade and a half of their franchise," Simmons said on The Ringer.

Some Calling for NBA Finals Officiating to Be Examined

The claim being made is that the NBA Finals refereeing was heavily biased toward the San Antonio Spurs. Presumably, this was to ensure there was a game 6 and 7. If the series went to game 7, a lot of money would be generated. But, the New York Knicks won despite this bias, that's how superior they were (allegedly). What do you think?

Well, they did it, after a long drought. Well done the New York Knickerbockers, 2026 NBA Champions.

Knicks One Win Away

It looks like the Trump jinx has been lifted with the New York Knickerbockers winning game 4 of the NBA Finals, to go 3-1 up. Many alive today have never seen the Knicks win an NBA title. Now, they're one win away. In the final seconds, OG Anunoby, for the Knicks, pulled off a crucial block to prevent the Spurs from scoring, then at the other end, he made a spectacular tip-in to seal the win.

Premier League Relegation Battle

Association Football - It looks highly likely that Premier League team, West Ham, will be relegated to the second tier of the English pyramid system, called the Championship.

What does this mean for the club? Well, they'll receive a serious haircut in terms of revenue and they will need to sell off many of their most expensive players.

I like promotion/relegation, and this is what's wrong with the NBA and other leagues like it. At certain points in the season, teams know they cannot win the title and they stop playing hard, knowing they cannot go down. If there was even a chance the bottom team may drop, then watch the fur fly, they'd be scrambling for the wins. For the record, the team with the worst record in the latest season is the Washington Wizards with a regular season 17 wins and 65 losses. Why can't another team be given the chance of buying them out and potentially moving the team to another city? It'd keep the league on their toes.

Early NBA

I notice more early NBA footage is available online. The standard of play was really high and very competitive. I rarely watch the NBA these days as it has become a snore fest. The three point shot has killed the modern game, and a host of other rule interpretations haven't helped either. I still think a three point shot light needs to be introduced. That would mean a three point attempt can be made when the light is illuminated but not when it is off. One way this could work is if a three point shot is missed, the light goes off and no further three pointers can be made until the team makes another basket (1 or 2 pointer).

Bill Laimbeer Remembered

1980's basketball wasn't just a scoring contest, teams actually played defense. Bring back the biff?

In the below video I laughed at the comment, that Charles Barkley hated Bill Laimbeer more than any other player in the NBA....outside of Boston.

NBA Failing

The NBA is boring, too many threes. Well, my suggestion is to introduce a three point shot light. If players miss a 3-pointer, the light goes out and the teams cannot score a three again until they make another basket.

Oh, and police double dribble, carrying the ball and travelling, the players now often double dribble and taking more than two steps seems routine.

NBA Three-point Field Goal - Suggest Rule Change

NBA games have developed into three-point field goal shooting contests. Several reasons for this, the first being shooting accuracy has improved. The second is down to game statisticians who point out that a three-point goal is worth a lot more than a two-pointer. Thus, players now often step back behind the three point line to ensure a higher return. The downside is that fans are subjected to a lot of misses, and this is very boring to watch.

Change the Rule

I suggest a three-point light be introduced that is activated by the score bench. When illuminated it allows a three-point shot, but when the light is off any shot from the field is only worth two points.

Like this: when the game starts each team will have their respective three point light showing. When a three-point shot is attempted, the referee indicates, and if the shot scores the light stays on and the referee motions to the score bench, counting three points. However, when a three-point shot is missed, the light goes out. Thereafter, a two-point shot must be made to once again get the three-point light back on (free throws would also count toward resetting the three-point shot).

This simple rule would prevent the three-point shot boring play you see now. Many times the offensive team can regain possession off a missed shot and repeat the three-point attempt. It becomes 'bombs away' play. With this simple rule, any missed attempt at a three-pointer would mean any basket must be first scored to get the three-pointer back, so teams would experience no advantage if they kick the ball back out to the wings for a low percentage shot.

This is an idea worth investigating as it promotes play across the whole court, and counters the addiction teams have to putting up as many three-point attempts as they can.

Boston Celtics For Sale

A few months back, the owners of the Boston Celtics put the NBA team on the market. The reason given was due to estate issues, which I interpret to mean family members want their money out.

So, what is the team worth? A lot of pundits place the value at between $5 and $6 billion. To me, that sounds light, any buyer interested in the team should come up with $8 billion. My thinking is pretty simple, the price paid must blow competing bids out of the way.

Then, the highest price paid for an NBA team thus far is $4 billion paid for the Phoenix Suns. Think about this, the Suns have never won a championship, while the Celtics have won more than anyone else. The Celtics must be worth double the Suns.

The Boston Celtics are an iconic brand worldwide, known by everyone and are instantly recognisable.

Reading the linked article: https://www.sportico.com/leagues/basketball/2024/boston-celtics-sale-document-basketball-business-1234821085/ I find they do not own their stadium. Any future owner should calculate the cost of building a new stadium, and thus control the revenue stream that stadium would bring in. EBITDA is quite low at 6% of total revenue, and ticket sales are the biggest single source of revenue. This is consistent with the very traditional form of professional sports teams, and that is ticket sales pay player salaries. Profit is derived from all other sources of income, but that's just the traditional old-school model. Just looking at this alone, it appears the Celtics are run in quite an old fashioned way.

At $8 billion, the Boston Celtics are a good buy.

[Update: sold for $6.1 billion according to ESPN. A bargain if that's accurate: https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/44328557/sources-bill-chisholm-agrees-buy-celtics-61-billion ]

The Luka Doncic Trade

I thought this theory good enough to post about, and it aligns with my speculation that a side deal was done between the owners of the Lakers and Mavericks.

This particular theory is that the new majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks wants to relocate the team to Las Vegas, where the owners live and have their casinos. The team would become the Las Vegas Mavericks. To achieve this goal, they need to destroy the team in Dallas first, thus justifying the move.

LeBron James has stated that he wants to own an NBA team in Las Vegas, so he's been sent Doncic to get more titles with, then he comes in as part of the ownership group of the Mavs in Las Vegas.

It sounds a bit farfetched for my liking, but looking at the facial expressions of the Mavs coach, Jason Kidd at the announcement of the trade, we can assume people were told a pack of lies and that something went on behind the scenes. Personally, I prefer as a piece of speculation, that some kind of stadium deal was done between Adelson and Buss.

Another spin on this is that Las Vegas is being used as a bargaining chip to try and get gambling through the Texas legislature. This could have some legs, but I wouldn't think casinos would be welcomed in Texas, so this looks as if the Mavericks are off to Las Vegas if this is the strategy being used:

Why is the NBA Failing?

Being a lifelong fan of the NBA, I just accepted that the NBA would be forever, and one of the biggest professional sports leagues on the planet. However, it appears to be shedding fans and that has got me thinking, why is the NBA failing?

The first and most important reason is the league management chose to promote stars over teams. If you look at other sports, team always comes before the stars on that team. When you promote the individual, you embrace celebrity culture, and that's very risky.

And this risk paid off to begin with, but now, look at the NBA and the stars are old or problematic. They're problematic in that they represent lifestyles that people abhor, or politics that people do not vote for. There has been a slew of NBA coaches and players going on anti-Trump tirades that immediately alienate 50% of the fanbase. Then you have players recorded as saying things such as; 'there's no party like a Diddy party.'

The second point is that players are grossly overpaid. Players are paid so much they don't really need to turn up, they'll be rich whether they win or not. After a few seasons, players probably don't even need to work again. This has removed all incentive to perform.

Third, rule interpretations have allowed offense to dominate defense. Does the three point line need to be moved? No, they just need to allow defense, and not allow players to get such easy looks at the basket. If they allowed defensive specialists to sit on sharp-shooters like Steph Curry, you wouldn't see that many three point attempts. As soon as three pointers become harder to attempt, you'll get real basketball.

The same applies under the basket as well. Hand checking, and preventing free movement of the offense has to return to the NBA, the referees issuing off-the-ball fouls for all kinds of imagined infractions needs to stop.

Fourth, the cost of watching games has become too expensive. This applies whether attending games or watching online or on the TV. Bring the cost down. I can understand local area broadcast blackouts, but the cost of going to the game has to be reasonable to compensate.

Fifth, stop rigging games. This occurs both during the regular season and the playoffs. We've all seen it and the fans are leaving.

Sixth, instead of allowing players to 'load manage' or miss games; how about reducing the number of games played? There are 30 teams, if each play home and away, that's 58 games for each team. If you add an extra game against division rivals, that's a total of 62 games compared to the 82 games teams play now. Make each game worth more to players and watch them compete. If you think about top tennis players, they may compete in 20 tournaments a year, but do not play round-robin and so if knocked out they get less play. In a league like the NBA, teams have to turn up and the coach can substitute players, which is a form of load management anyway. Thus, 62 games is about the same load a top tennis player would face. Correct me if I'm wrong.

But back to first, the most important correction - take the politics out of sport, demote the stars, and pay all players less.

LeBron James Personal Reasons

I wonder what is up with LeBron James? Reports are saying he's in a slump, but in reality his numbers in the NBA are still pretty good.

There's a lot of speculation doing the rounds as to why he's taking a break for personal reasons. Hmm...

Mavericks vs Timberwolves Game 1

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first game of the NBA's Western Conference semifinals. It was a very tight game, but the referees made a crucial call late in the fourth quarter when they ruled Karl-Anthony Towns of the Timberwolves had committed an offensive goaltending violation off a Mike Conley shot attempt. Towns made a spectacular dunk off the missed shot, but the referees disallowed it, and the video referral upheld the original call - no basket.

Here's footage of that play: https://x.com/RGIII/status/1793476117850189898?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1793476117850189898%7Ctwgr%5Ef584226241920f84f612e56d9f7fc9e098f4cddb%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sportingnews.com%2Fau%2Fnba%2Fnews%2Fbasket-interference-karl-anthony-towns-timberwolves-mavericks%2F60d3a3087d7e8a81a1774913

This seems to be a very harsh decision that affected the outcome of the game. After Conley's shot hits the rim, the ball bounces up above the basket, but to my eye the ball is falling outside of the imaginary cylinder above the ring. In situations like this, calls are almost never made, it was an incredible play and the shot was not going in - period. What do you think?

Wembanyama 40-20-7

The NBA's Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs, certainly set the Frost Bank Center on fire when he scored 40 points, took 20 rebounds and made seven assists against the visiting New York Knickerbockers. A 40/20/5 from a rookie is a pretty rare thing indeed.

But, don't get too excited. The game was essentially meaningless to all intents and purposes. The Spurs have been eliminated from the post season, while the Knicks are through to the playoffs. So, what just happened was the usual statistics padding exercise. There was very little on the line other than pride.

While Wembanyama is an outstanding player, we are yet to see if he can withstand the pressure of season after season in the NBA.

Steven Adams Traded to the Houston Rockets

Steven Adams is one lucky guy. He's been traded from the Memphis Grizzlies to the Houston Rockets, in return for Victor Oladipo and three second round draft picks. Both players are coming back from injury and haven't played this season.

This is a good move for Adams, as Houston can actually win titles, while the Grizzlies are perennial cellar dwellers and have never won a title. Houston gain a good defensive player, something they need, while the Grizzlies save money and can pay a bit more for players they think they need.

As a Rockets fan, I'm really pleased to see Adams with my team. If his knee doesn't recover, he may be close to retirement, but touch wood that he comes out fired up next season.
