The US is moving a carrier strike group in the direction of Iran right now, so it does look as if they'll intervene in what's going on there, at least in some capacity. They could easily shut down Iran's oil trade, effectively cutting off their source of income.
The latest claim is that the regime has used chemical weapons against the protesters.
